Tech Tip Tuesday: Common RV Power Issues

The song says that there ain't no mountain high enough that will separate you from your girl. But when it comes to the high voltage connection at the power pedestal, disconnecting the connection with a high amp appliance can cause damage to the appliance, separating your money from your wallet.

Make sure that your A/C in the summer months or your fireplace in the winter months is turned off before you disconnect the power from the pedestal. If not, you can send a spike that can damage the appliance.

Also, ensure all appliances are off before you plug your RV into the power pedestal. Further, before plugging your power cord in, inspect the receptacle, and if it shows any sign of being melted or deformed, ask the RV part to replace it or ask for a new campsite. Your RV power head should fit snugly into the pedestal. If it is loose, it will cause a heat build-up in your head, leading to a melted connection, giving you dirty power, and damaging your appliances.

The best protection against power problems at the pedestal is the Bulldog Surge Protector. We love this product for several reasons:

  • It has many features and different price points depending on the size and features.

  • It has a Bluetooth app that alerts you about a problem.

  • Some models will disconnect the power when the voltage is too high or too low.

  • The surge protection component is replaceable. And an extra one is included in the initial purchase.

Finally, periodically, check your power head and look for any loose connections, signs of the head getting hot, and any loose prongs in the head.

If we can ever answer a question, even if you did not buy the product from us, we will gladly assist you in any way we can. Or, if you are on the road and have a question about your RV or a problem, call us. We would be glad to help you solve your problem, if possible.

We love to take the hassle out of RV'ing and to make your adventures more enjoyable.
